Though Shanghai sits far from the sea, its spirit is no less romantic—flowing with elegance and vitality.

Few places capture that spirit like Wukang Road, a street known for its charm and sophistication. Nestled along its quiet curve is a 1930s garden house, now reborn as the XiaoZhuo Flagship Store, redesigned by Yuan Yuan and Nie Xuan of Offhand Practice.

The building’s small, refined floors echo Shanghai's own temperament—compact yet profound. Drawing from the city’s French-inspired atmosphere, the designers crafted a “green path” through the space using textured concrete forms and gentle curves. These green structures meet walls finished in Benjamin Moore’s “White Sand”, a warm off-white that evokes sunlight on coastal sand.

From the meandering entry to the upper floors, the transition between material, texture, and tone is subtle and intentional. On the second and third floors, large swaths of White Sand harmonize with pale linen carpets, creating a quiet, breathable space that brings attention back to the clothing itself. Every corner flows with light and calm—where architectural clarity and emotional softness meet.

This is not just a store, but a spatial narrative—one that unfolds slowly, allowing XiaoZhuo’s brand spirit to be felt in every step and every shadow.

Yuan Yuan & Nie Xuan @ Offhand Practice

Founded in 2018 by Yuan Yuan and Nie Xuan, Offhand Practice is a Shanghai-based design studio specializing in spatial design across a wide range of scales and typologies—from bookstores, fashion retail, and art galleries to pop-up spaces and residences.

Rather than applying preconceived design concepts, Offhand Practice approaches each project with a problem-solving mindset. The studio seeks to understand the specific conditions of a site, its users, and potential energy, treating space as a dynamic field of human interaction. They aim to respond to both tangible and intangible aspects of a place through thoughtful spatial strategies.

Selected Projects

  • (Shanghai): A secondhand bookstore and recycling shop that mixes vintage tones with contemporary clarity—celebrating reuse and urban calmness.
  • (Guangzhou): Located in a historic neighborhood, this project reimagines a structural column as a central circulation device, shaping the brand’s new identity through movement.
  • (Jiangsu): A creative workspace located in a narrow alleyway, using elongated circulation to guide visitors and encourage public curiosity.

Offhand Practice's works have been featured in Dezeen, Designboom, Wallpaper, and have been recognized by Dezeen Awards, affirming their growing influence in contemporary interior and spatial design.
